PHEW! Now that’s all cleared up can we move on?
What is Poly? Poly is the new name for Plantronics.
If you’re looking to answer calls (from your office phone) away from your desk you’ll need a or an Electronic Hook Switch depending on the phone you have (call our staff for assistance). It seems odd that the headset can’t answer the phone on it’s own but, because the headset connects to your desk phone via the base unit, not by Bluetooth directly, and because there are so many requirements in all the different model phones, Poly (and all headset manufacturers) have to make this a separate part. To find the correct solution for your phone, you can hit the green ‘Add to Cart’ button and follow the prompts, or just call our friendly team for assistance!
So let’s start by reviewing
This is essentially a Voyager 5200 with a base unit to make it connect to a desk phone. The 5200 has been a very popular Bluetooth headset with some intuitive features making it an easy to use solution for anyone after an earhook only option.
When out of the office the Voyager 5200 performs very well and is one of our most popular Bluetooth headsets – precision tuned triple mics with DSP and give you state of the art noise cancelling and the WindSmart® tech gives ‘6 layers of wind protection’ – all nerd speak for great sound wherever you are. You can also stream music from your mobile or tablet and control volume skip tracks etc.
With up to 7 hours of talk time when new, you’re probably going to need to put it on the base unit to charge at lunchtime on very busy days, but its adequate for most users. NB as with previous Plantronics earhook styles the battery is not replaceable, so you’ll need to replace the headset piece down the track it you’re not getting enough juice out of it for your day after a couple of years or so.
The patended Soundguard technology will protect your ears from sudden loud noises (above 118 decibels)
Other things to consider
Not everyone likes and over the ear (and in ear) wearing style but that’s the only option with this headset. This headset won’t work with a computer (even if you have a laptop with Bluetooth, most applications won’t recognise it). (look at the CD version we recommended earlier)
Other headsets in the Plantronics/Poly range (and other brands) allow you conference in other headsets which is useful for training and small conference calls, the 5200 Office headsets cannot do this.
If you need extensive range, this is best achieved with a DECT wireless headset, rather than a Bluetooth like the Poly Office series. DECT wireless headsets advertise a range of up to 180m (depending on the model), this is expected to reduce to about 55m in a standard office, so the Bluetooth range that Poly advertise on this model may also be substantially shorter in reality, depending on a variety of factors.
The microphone boom on this headset is shorter than most which makes it more discreet for when being used outside but this does have drawbacks. Poly have put some great tech in the headset but there are better headsets for you if you work in a noisy office. This mic, will, by the very nature of its design, pick up more background noise than most other office headsets, so consider – how important is using a headset out of the office to me, vs how i sound to clients.
If you plan on using this out on the road you may like to also get the portable charging case for this headset (shown below in our Frequently Bought Together section) – it keeps the headset safe and dust free as well as charging it.
The Verdict
If you want an ear-hook style to work with desk-phone and mobile this is quite unique in its ability to allow you to carry on the mobile call as you leave the office. Just make sure that the specs such as range and battery life are going to be enough for the way you’ll use it.
Other Headsets You Could Consider Before Buying
If you prefer a headband style, check out the or the If you need to connect to a PC/Mac as well and like the 5200 style, the is the right version for you. If you’re a Poly/Plantronics fan and want better specs with a headset to use in the office, the is super and also connect to a PC/Mac. They have the better specs of a DECT wireless headset and come in a range of wearing styles.
If however you just want a headset for your desk phone, our top pick is the which comes with an ear-hook and headband in the box, has great quality sound, long range and super battery life with a replaceable battery.
