Plantronics had dominated the market for such a long time but you can certainly argue that with the DW range, Sennheiser is the new heavyweight champion of the wireless headset world. The headphone and microphone gurus at Sennheiser have used their 60 years of audio experience and R&D to create headset perfection. As we always say, the golden rule of headsets is to buy the best you can afford and, we hope your boss has given you the ok to buy any model in the new DW range.

So let’s start by reviewing…

The Good

It’s not so much ‘the good’ in this instance as ‘the great’. We may sound biased but the Simply Headsets staff can choose to use any headset they want, and since its release, more than 90% of our team use Sennheisers, the rest we suspect must have been too busy so far to change!. That said, we challenge you to find a better sounding, faster charging, more intelligent, feature-packed headset – because we know we can’t.

To start off, the HD voice clarity of the DW Pro 2 USB is brilliant. If you need a headset to use with Dragon Naturally Speaking, Dragon Dictate, this is it. The outstanding microphone quality has earned the DW series the coveted top score of 6 Dragons. This means less errors in your dictation, less time manually correcting and more time for, well anything and everything else in your life! Similarly for other dictation programmes, Skype, softphone applications etc, everything you say (not the person next to you, or the kids or dog barking) is picked up and perfectly replicated by the excellent ultra-noise cancelling microphone.

You can of course listen to music played from your PC. Audiophiles please note this headset is optimised for voice communications, not music, so you won’t get the normal Sennheiser quality sound when listening to your tunes, but it’s still fine to bop out to.

The range is up to a staggering 180 metres so you can wander far from your PC and still maintain an excellent connection. It’s very comfortable and of course can be worn all day.

How about this for clever; If you’re training someone on a softphone or USB compatible phone, all you need to do is get yourself a USB compatible model from the DW range.   Simply place the headset to the base and it automatically conferences both headsets to the call.  The same feature also works if you have multiple users sharing the same PC (eg. sharing a reception desk).  When one user is finished they dock their headset and put it on charge, while the other simply starts their shift by ‘touching’ their headset to the base, which automatically pairs the two devices. 

The super fast charge of the DW Pro 2 USB is SO handy when (not if) you forget to dock it overnight. Most headsets take an hour or more to charge to 50% but with a DW in just 20 minutes you’ll have enough battery to see you up to lunchtime. The DW USB has a 12-hour talk time (or 8 hours on high quality wideband), so even the heaviest user won’t run out of juice. Like the vast majority of Sennheiser products, this headset features ActiveGuard technology to make it G616-compliant. G616 is an Australian OH&S guideline created to protect phone users from loud, potentially harmful noises. These ‘acoustic shocks’ can be transmitted as a result of electricity spikes, weather conditions, transmission faults and the like as well as nasty people blowing whistles, screaming etc.. Failure to comply with G616 guidelines can result in fatigue, anxiety or temporary/permanent hearing loss, but Sennheiser’s ActiveGuard means you’ll be protected whenever you are using your headset.

The Not-So-Good

There is very little negative to say about this product. However, if you want to get the most from this headset you’ll need to fully read the instruction manual. But don’t worry, it’s straightforward and easy to understand and our friendly staff are just a phone call away. The DW Pro 2 USB only works with a computer (as it name suggests) – but fear not there is a model that also connects to a desk phone – the original .

Whilst manufacturers recommend anyone spending more than 4 hours a day on the phone should use a duo wearing style to spread the load, binaural headsets aren’t for everyone. They make receptionists look a little unapproachable and if you like to hear what’s going on in the office, you’ll find yourself taking it off all the time which can be tiresome. The Verdict

The Sennheiser DW Pro 2 USB is an almost unbeatable headset to use with just your computer. The microphone and audio quality are really in a league of their own. For a few extra dollars you get a substantially better headset than other manufacturer’s USB only offerings.

Don’t want to go with a Sennheiser? Another worthy contender is the latest It’s an excellent unified communications option with office+ computer + mobile phone. It offers a sexy touch screen and is brilliant in its own right. Alternatively, Plantronics fans are raving about the latest Our staff tend to think they simply don’t have the flair or style of the DW range. What they do offer is the same UC capabilities of the Jabra above and mobile connectivity. For a PC only model the is a good Plantronics option.
